One of the challenges of being a one-man operation is that it is quite easy to be overwhelmed by circumstances. As much as I like to set deadlines, I have zero strategic depth. When live intervenes, it is often decisive.
This was what happened to the long-awaited revision of Conqueror: Fields of Victory.
Because I am the kind of person who hates updates that convey no new information, I have been silent on the subject because there hasn’t been anything to say other than “I’m busy, I’ll get to it when I can.” I much prefer waiting until there is something meaningful to announce, and so here we are.
As of this writing, we’re back in business, and I am pushing aggressively to get this thing done. Most of the updated army lists (which are only suggestions) are finished, and I’m erring on the side of brevity to get the remaining factions done. One of the strengths of the system is that I provide full transparency on how to make your own units. The lists are something of a teaser. The first edition didn’t have any, and that didn’t work out because some people want to have at least examples. The current version provided that, but it was still somewhat DIY in the approach.
I’m now being a bit more comprehensive in terms of fully thought out factions, which can help illustrate how players might build their own.
There are also some important changes to the rules, including more special abilities and a thorough revision to the weapons. The old “light/heavy” crossbow distinction is gone, and that design space now includes a repeating crossbow, useful for fantasy as well as Chinese armies. I’m not going to name a deadline for its completion, but an obvious goal would be to have this thing ready in time for the Christmas shopping season. God willing, I’ll get it done.
