Call it what you want, “vibe shift” or “cultural counter-revolution,” the transformation of the American cultural landscape is here to stay. A large part of this was systemic – the woke structure was unsustainable in the long term. The backbones of the movement – which were completely inorganic – were too expensive to sustain. Pure demographics would have killed off the DEI college degrees and many universities are closing their doors or making drastic cuts. Yes, many of the liberal ones will try to protect DEI (under another name of course) but that will just drag them down so much faster.
Another aspect is the ongoing Christian revival. I’ve written before about the Catholic renaissance, and while critics (and pessimists) note that its absolute numbers remain relatively small, bit trends always start small. The Church’s decline has taken decades to get to this point, and the restoration will take a while.
I had intended to make a separate post bout Pope Leo’s visit to France, but it is very relevant here. When 800,000 people attend an outdoor Mass in a supposedly played-out secular state, that’s a very big deal. The 80,000 attendees at the soccer stadium witnessed a ‘parade of French saints’ that is adding further momentum. France was once the Eldest Daughter of the Church, and that legacy still resonates. Young people in particular are finding renewed love of their culture and their ancestral faith. To put it another way, they realize that things can change for the better. It doesn’t always have to be like this.
Adding to the inevitable decline of the liberal dream is the ageing out of the 1968 generation. If you were 18 in 1968, you are 76 now. The Boomers are dying off at an accelerating rate. Gen X is replacing them as the dominant demographic group, and they are savagely against the destruction of tradition and society that their parents caused. They absolutely do not care about your feelings and will happily (and publicly) denounce transexuals as “freaks” and “weirdos,” which they in fact are.
The United States is (as is often the case) leading the way in this cultural revival, and elsewhere desperate efforts are underway to lock the lid down on that pot. Canada’s leadership is prepared to destroy the economy to keep woke in place, and are using anti-American hate and Orwellian wartime language to keep their Boomer voters in line. “Elbows Up” sounds absurd to everyone else, but a great many Canadians are buying into the delusion.
In Germany, the establishment keeps doubling down on failed policies and are resorting to police-state tactics to shut down alternative political parties, which of course only makes them more popular. The entire post-war cultural framework is on the ropes and, like late-stage Soviet Central Planning, is frantically trying to hold everything together even as it crumbles from within.
All of these are materialist facts, and while important, the pale when compared to the spiritual side of things, and this is what scares the woke liberals the most. We are not like them. We do not think death is the worst thing that can happen to us. We are not willing to lie and debase ourselves for material gain. We see suffering for our faith as an opportunity, not a punishment to be avoided.
This has happened time and again throughout history, and the lesson is always forgotten. Faith is no longer a punchline, and Christians are becoming more vocal and assertive. Nice Christianity is dead.
