The obligatory Semiquincentennial/America 250 post

It’s kind of crazy that the Bicentennial was a half-century ago. I’m officially old.

Lots of flags are out around town, and while the celebration got off to a slow start this year, I’m seeing decorations everywhere. I’m also pleased to see that lots of stores are closed today, which is a great thing. Retail stores should always close on holidays. I remember having to remember to get gas and essential food items because everything would be shut down the next day.

To be sure, there are dissidents. Most of the “pride” flags are gone, but some are still defiantly aloft, and their displacement of Old Glory speaks volumes about the allegiance of the owner.

But even in a liberal college town, the holdouts are few and dwindling. Red, white and blue are preponderant, and the fireworks displays are already quite impressive. I’ll be setting a few off myself this evening (weather permitting, of course).

I think a lot of people are enjoying sharing their love of country with their neighbors, and celebrating things we have in common rather than things that drive us apart.

Happy Birthday, America!
