As part of spring cleaning, I’ve been clearing out a bunch of DVDs that we haven’t watched in years. Much of this was my wife’s doing. If we liked a show, we’d go buy that season, or sometimes the whole show. Long-time readers know I did this with Magnum, p.i., Miami Vice and other shows.
Among the shows we decided to part with was Game of Thrones, of which we owned the first six seasons. From the beginning, I was not a fan.
That being said, I did have some sympathy for George R.R. Martin because it was clear early on in watching the show that he was setting himself up to fail.
Thanks to ebay, I’m now able to quantify that failure. $4.50. That’s how much the first six seasons of Game of Thrones was worth. By way of comparison, that 10% of The Gilmore Girls and a quarter of Veronica Mars, which I also sold.
Now some purists may protest that those were complete shows, whilst the (crappy) ending of Game of Thrones was omitted. Okay, let’s compare like with like. I also sold a lot consisting of the first season of True Blood, season 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead, and three seasons of Penny Dreadful. That went for $3.99.
It’s pretty much a given that he will never finish the series because the obvious way to do so is anathema to him. He is hoist by his own petard. There is nothing wrong with telegraphing and ending so long as it is done way, and perhaps executed in a surprising and unexpected way.
As it stands, a massive cultural phenomenon is basically on par with shows most people never heard of.
