Twilight of the No Mow May

It’s almost halfway through the month, and I’ve not spotted a single “No Mow May” yard sign. What is more, all of the yards seem to have been mowed at least once. We had a spot of rain, and there is usually someone who is on vacation/mower in the show/falling behind, but nothing to indicate a deliberate neglect.

Like so many virtue-signaling activities, this has run its course. It was on life support last year, and even after the first glorious season, it was in clear decline in its second year.

This is of course the premier example of Yard Sign Calvinism, the epitome of cheap grace and virtue signaling. After the first “Lawn Death June,” the decline was expected.

Like so many trendy causes, it ultimately failed because the material costs exceeded the social capital gain. It is a necessary reminder that the most important part of cheap grace is that it be cheap.
