Some years ago, I regretfully gave up listening to The Lord of Spirits podcast because one of it’s hosts, Father Stephen De Young, was do vehemently – and dishonestly – anti-Catholic.
By chance (or was it?) I happened upon a video pointing out that apparently he is still doing podcasts, and still making deeply dishonest attacks on Catholic practices.
Out of curiosity, I also checked to see if The Lord of Spirits was still chugging along and it is, and it’s still slagging on Catholic practices he’s invented out of whole cloth. I can’t help but wonder what he will do if the Great Schism is actually healed. Will he become schismatic?
I’ve remarked before on how a lot of the “Orthobros” seem to want to create differences where they simply don’t exist. The Catholic Church is not monolithic, famously having an Eastern Orthodox Rite within it that practices the same liturgy as the other Orthodox churches. Of course, Eastern Orthodoxy is in a terrible state of schism, with two of its patriarchates actually at war with one another.
There are a couple of passages that seem to apply to this, like getting one’s own house in order, not being the one to throw the first stone, pulling the beam out of one’s eye. This lends credence to my original surmise that much of Father Stephen’s religious identity is built around anti-Catholic animus. He just can’t seem to stop.
That’s a shame, because I was a huge fan of The Lord of Spirits, recommended it highly and seriously thought about going to one of their meet-ups. I pray that Father Stephen understand the harm he is doing. For a guy who talks a lot about spiritual warfare, he needs to understand who is standing shoulder-to-should with him when he takes pot shots at the Catholic Church.
