The remarkable Nativity narrative

As part of research on my long-developing Atlantis project, I dug into various mythologies and the more one reads into them, the more remarkable the Gospels become. There is simply nothing like it.

To be sure, there are plenty of heroes who claim divine ancestry, but they are immediately exalted and during their lifetimes become mighty kings, warriors or hold other positions of power. To be born in a manger and then die on a cross is completely alien.

This speaks to the reality of the Gospel claims. If – as Bible scholars all seem to assume – it’s just made up, why not make it more compelling? The Jews themselves largely refused to buy into it because it was so at variance with their expectations for the Messiah. The first rule of writing is: know your audience. That clearly didn’t happen here.

I think one of the core lessons of the Nativity is that God can surprise us in wonderful ways, but we have to be open to it. We cannot let our expectations prevent us from seeing what is right there before us. The expectation of Advent is now over, and the time for celebration is here. Merry Christmas!
