The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe turns 20

This week I was shocked to realize that the first Narnia movie came out 20 years ago. My family loved it, and while I had skipped the books to that point, we read all of them to our kids.

I think it is one of the best movie adaptions out there, and it has held up after repeated viewings. While it is consistent with the vision and intent of C.S. Lewis, the scope of the story is made bigger – the final battle is really just a skirmish in the book, but it is much more profound on the big screen.

Honestly, it’s better than any of the battles Peter Jackson featured in his deeply flawed Lord of the Rings movies. (I did not watch any of The Hobbit movies).

Unlikely Jackson, who never passed up an opportunity to mess with the story or insert a cheap joke, Andrew Adamson spent his energy trying to get the most from his child actors and bring out their personalities. It was brilliantly successful, and my kids had no problem understanding their actions and motivations.

I intend to watch it with my grandkids, who are about the same age as my kids were when they saw it. It’s a great Christmas film with all the snow and of course Father Christmas showing up, and if you haven’t seen it, now is a great time to remedy that deficiency.
