Rediscovering the joy of miniatures

Looking through my recent postings, I realized that I haven’t been writing much about movies or entertainment. This is because most of my free time is going into getting the old miniatures assembly line put back together. It has been years since I was able to paint and play with my little guys, and as a result, the gaming area was in terrible shape. So the first step was cleaning it up and organizing it, and that is an ongoing task.

Then I had to go and figure out where everything was, what I still had, what I needed, and so on. It is a very pleasant business. I like miniatures because at the end of the session, you have something tangible. For a while I enjoyed console games as a time-waster, but perhaps with age I’ve become more aware that time is not something one should waste lightly.

I’m not one of those people who just likes to paint – I paint to play with painted things, not merely to admire them. I find unpainted models (or merely primed ones) offensive in my sight. They ruin the aesthetic of the tabletop, which is a big part of what I enjoy about miniatures.

It’s basically model railroading where the trains fight each other.

Music is also a part of the experience. I have a collection of CDs (yes, I know) and a three-disk player, so I can tailor the sound experience to the genre of game I’m working on. It’s very calming, and I’ve noticed my blood pressure is dropping the more I time I spend on it.

I’ve also learned the value of surgical gloves in keeping my fingers from getting stuck together.

I will at some point return to watching movies, and I’m continuing to read books (mostly in bed), but for now, it is like the return of an old friend I have sorely missed. For those into the hobby, I’ve been doing a lot of Warhammer 40,000, but am now transitioning to my propriety fantasy/historical rules, Conqueror: Fields of Victory. I may post gaming content at some point, but WordPress is still new to me, so posting pictures is something I will have to explore.
