Fall cleaning starts early

This summer has been a very unpleasant one.  It was bad enough to have had weeks of oppressive heat and enervating humidity, but the prevalence of Canadian smoke largely wrecked the traditional joys of summer.

Last weekend, both trends broke, and as a result, I kept my keyboard use to a minimum.  School is starting, and there was much to be done, but inside the house and out.

Energy is a funny thing .  You try to conserve it, but often you lose it.  Without outdoor activity, my indoor efforts also faded.  Thus, starting on Sunday, I resumed my long-abandoned practice of early morning and evening walks.  The effect was immediate and the results have been largely positive.

Of course, I had to overdo things, which resulted in some back pain, restricting my cleaning/organizing activities.  This was a true test, because it would have been the easiest thing in the world to backslide and stare into the black mirror as I had done for so many weeks.

Instead, I started reading again, specifically Graham Greene's The End of the Affair.  More on that later.  The takeaway is that consistency – especially in the new stages of a regimen – is essential.  They say it takes three weeks to lock in a habit, and whether or not that is true, the first week is definitely the hardest.

That being said, my energy levels have definitely improved, and that was partly why I overdid it.  I've throttled back to heal up and regroup, lowering the intensity of my workouts and walks, but the time slots must be obeyed!

I'm hoping that in the next few weeks as the school time routine settles in and the grandkids retire early, I will be able to resume serious writing.
